CHAPTER ONE:
Parenting: A Universal Challenge
Parenting is a universal phenomenon of tending children. Regardless of culture, the background, or circumstances, all parents face common challenges in raising children and balancing their responsibilities. These challenges include guiding children through their learning and growth, balancing discipline with love, meeting physical and emotional needs, and prepare them for the complex world they live in. Parents everywhere grapple with the uncertanities and difficulties of making right decisions, the pressure and challenges of providing a stable learning, growth, and development; and the desire to ensure their children’s contentment, happiness, and success can be achieved…despite these differences, the core struggle of parenting connect all parents in a shared journey of nurturing the next generation.
Working in the field of early childhood education, I witnessed and learned the vulnerability the working parents carry, the guiltiness, and the longing-ness for a better way. Working mothers, in particular, feels overwhelmed by societal demands-they must assume the role of child rearing, while taking care of house keeping business; the working parents are so overwhelmed by the life their societal-environment provides them. They ind themselves too busy, too caught up in their own personal struggle to be able to deeply involved into the details of their children’s daily lives in the care facilities or schools they put them.
More and more mothers are now at work place leaving the most precious treasure-their children out of their sight for more than half of the day hours under the care of someone else. Of course, there are those who are cared for by their fathers, most of them sharing split shift with the children’s mothers; and those who are cared for by the mothers while they work. i.e. cradle nursing baby in one arm while typing with the other or picking up the phone call and changing baby’s diaper at the same time. Most of what your children did at school and how they were affected or impacted will remain forever a mystery to us as we spend countless hours each month reconsidering and worrying about our children away from home. This creates a longing for a better lifestyle that brings peace and joy to both parents and children. Parents from diverse backgrounds share similar struggles and hopes for a better future for their children. The trouble with parenting is that there is no one-size for raising well-rounded children fits all, there is no instructions or formular for parenting; just trial and error, and lots of love and hope. The issue of safety, health, learning, growth, and development are central to transforming children’s lives to vibrant learning and positive and healthy living standards.
